Stompy.com Is Back

Just relaunched and I love the new interface. Some digital stores can be so overwhelming. This one is nice and simple.

Have Someone Else Warp Your Ableton Tracks

I haven’t used Ableton since version 3. It was fun but I hated having to warp all the tracks. Now the program is much better (with midi capabilty and much more) and there are stores like dancetracksdigital.com where you can buy Ableton-ready versions. Earlier, after reading some comments on djtechtools.com, I found a service where they will warp them for you. This seems kind of lazy but if I were a full-time Ableton user I would think about using the service because I go through so many new tracks. When I used to play vinyl I would play 12-18 tracks in an hour, now that I use Traktor and my VCI-100, I play much more.wFriday night I played about 30 tracks in and hour and a half. About 80 percent of those were new so I could have used some help warping them. I spend a lot of time setting up cue points, loops and beat grids in Traktor Pro so maybe someone will start a service to help with that too. Then I would have more time to find more music–it’s a sickness.

Mini Scratch Turntable

Here’s a little turntable that plugs into your mp3 player and acts as a speaker. You can also do your little scratch thing with it.

Dumb? Yes. Should you get me one? Of course.

I’m Playing at Bar Dynamite Tonight 11.12

Bar Dynamite is a cool little bar here in SD. I was the dj and promoter for Wednesday nights when it first opened back in 1999. I tried to get my little night going but it was tough since back then there was no dancing and house was not very popular in San Diego.

When I moved up to LA to work at BPM Magazine I turned it over to Lil’ Ryan because I knew he and his partner Duane would keep it going. Little did I know that they would still be going 8 years later and now they’ve turned it into one of the best deep house nights on the West Coast with so many quality big name djs I couldn’t even name them all. Oh and it’s always free, no matter who’s playing.

So it’s nice that they still have me play and I’m really looking forward to it.

4-Track recorder For Iphone/Ipod

The number once reason for me wanting these devices is that I can actually create music on them. Thanks to great apps like idrum and this, I can work out real beats and phrases while I’m stuck waiting for a tow truck to carry away my neglected car. At least I got me some music-making gadgets!

Vestax VCI 300

I’ve been ignoring many of these digital dj interfaces up until now.

I recently sold my M-Audio Torq system since it didn’t work as consistently as I wanted; anytime I wanted to use it I spent way too much time fiddling with it. I also had trouble playing gigs with it since everyone else uses Serato and it’s not a good idea to keep switching boxes and cables.

So why do I want this? I like the idea that I can bring this with my laptop, all in a small backpack, and I can just plug it into a line out on the mixer. This means I’ll have two digital decks with midi-control and then I can still play using my record bag that I always bring.

The best of all worlds I always say…
