Digital Djing’s Next Step

I’m not sure why I support digital dj stuff so much. About 5 years ago my friends and I were killing a well-known guest dj from New York for playing all CDs. We thought it was ridiculous and now almost all of us use 70% cds in our sets. I’ve seen veteran djs–who have been doing it way longer than my measly 12 years– switch in a heartbeat to 100% CDs. The switch to Rane Serato has been slower in San Diego but it seems like almost every pro who travels a lot uses the ubiquitous system.

Numark created an ipod mixing gadget before but it was destined for failure because you could not pitch the music. Now (it seems) they’ve come up with something that might actually work. i imagine djs traveling with ipods who are able to play sets with music they carry in their pockets. This will be nice for vets whose backs are crying for relief from heavy-ass vinyl. I think that’s one reason CDs were adopted so quickly.

Anyway. This piece looks pretty cool. I still think the best modern system is M-Audio Torq (for its wealth of features) and then Serato, but something like this would be nice to have at a venue just to give you more options.
