Why jwdj?
I’ve been wrestling with the idea of continuing to use “Wesley” – my middle name – as a so-called performance name. Everyone who knows me as a dj knows me by Jon Wesley but I never been crazy about it. I’ve stuck with it only because it’s been that way for 12 years now.
JWDJ is something I feel like trying out to see if it feels right. I added dj to the end of my name when I started My Space and bought the URL for my website. DJ before the name always sounded dumb to me. So now I figure jwdj is still recognizable and it’s a little better than the other way. I’ve been trying to come up with various other production aliases but none of them seem right to replace my name. The only reason I even care is that people need something to relate to, easy to remember and it should be something that peaks interest in what you do.
I wish I could just throw out mixes and have people want to check out my dj sets at clubs. It happens every once-in-a-while but not enough to build any kind of following.
Here’s a mix sample from my old site. I made this when I lived in LA. Terence Toy put it out under the name “Pure Acid Jazz” which was an exclusive downtempo style series to be offered on Pure Acid Mixtapes. I got a lot of great feedback on this (from other djs no less) and although I wish it would have turned out better (it was recorded all in one take), it’s still one of my favorites. It’s not appropriate for work though so be cautious if you’re listening someplace conservative.
